Spriet Centre is under Construction!
By Sheila Johnson

The past two months have flown by and the Spriet Centre is now rising above the ground. The contract with Norlon Builders London Limited was signed on June 1st and approval received for a foundation permit at the same time. So on Monday, June 4th, excavation began. Top soils were striped back and fill removed from the building site, to be replaced with engineered fill. The excavator discovered a stone well and remains of a building foundation during the excavation. It is comforting to know that the Spriet Family Visitor Centre will be located where early settlers once lived.
Concrete foundation and footings began June 18th and were complete and backfilled by the end of June. With the approval of the full building permit received, construction of the floor and structural walls will occupy the month of July. The pre-engineered building has been ordered and will arrive around July 30th. After that, things will go up very fast! Expect to see a complete building structure by the end of the summer.
While the outside is going up, staff are confirming interior features. Furniture and appliances for the Spriet Centre have been finalized. The tender for the computer systems will be complete by the end of July and the final quotes are underway for chairs and tables for the Trillium Community Gallery. Jeff Willmore chose the colour palette for the interior and both hardware and key schedule have been finalized.
Donors, Board, staff and volunteers joined with major funders for a thrilling sod turning ceremony on Monday, June 18th. After 20 years of planning and five years of fundraising, the Spriet Family Visitor Centre is officially underway!
