The surprising story of London’s relationship with the bicycle.

By Dan Ebbs and Kydra Ryan
with Adam Corrigan Holowitz

Opening the season will be the world premiere of The Bicycle Play by Dan Ebbs, Kydra Ryan with Adam Corrigan Holowitz. This collective creation tells the story of London’s formative relationship with the bicycle, exploring the stories of the many Londoners who have used bicycles to shape their lives and our city. The play will be performed by Dan Ebbs and Kydra Ryan.

“This is the kind of play that is central to [AlvegoRoot’s] mission as a theatre. It tells a unique and surprising local story. As we are create this play, Dan, Kydra and myself are constantly astounded at just how much the bicycle is ingrained in London Ontario’s identity. This play is being created through research in archives and interviews with people passionate about London’s cycling past and present. Every person we have talked to has shared an outpouring of stories, history and passion. The result I can promise is going to be a colourful, funny and thrilling theatrical experience.” - Adam Corrigan Holowitz

Pirates of Long Point

A hilarious comedy set on the shore of Lake Erie.

By Adam Corrigan Holowitz

A new version of Pirates of Long Point by Adam Corrigan Holowitz. The play is a comedy, in the style of a 19th Century Melodrama, based on true events. A gang of young men are luring ships aground at Long Point, they then loot the ships and are gone before the authorities arrive. With the arrival of a bumbling American Navy admiral comes the threat of Long Point being annexed by the USA. The community must find a way to reform its moral character and keep Long Point part of Canada. The style of this play is in the same vein as AlvegoRoot’s productions of The Angel of Long Point in 2015 and The Cheese Poet in 2016 which also combined a piece of local history with comedic melodrama.

“The first production of Pirates of Long Point premiered last August in Port Rowan (right next to Long Point) and the audience response was wonderful. I am excited to present a new version of this joyful and silly play, with some new twists and turns in the story. What I find exciting about these ‘Souwesto Melodramas’ that I’ve been writing, is the cocktail of influences that we can draw upon. There are allusions to the classics, a good dose of slapstick, physical theatre, local history, and lots of song. The result is a rich celebration of theatre.” - Adam Corrigan Holowitz
